[Grammar] -(으)ㄴ 다음에 / -기 전에 : after doing / before doing

-(으)ㄴ 다음에 / -(으)ㄴ 후에 is used with a verb, it means ‘after you do something’.  For example,

verb(ending a vowel) +ㄴ 다음에
verb(ending a consonant)+은 다음에

수업 끝난 다음에 점심 먹을 거예요.  I will eat lunch after my class is finished.

운동한 다음에 쉴 거예요.  I will rest after I work out.

은행에서 돈을 찾은 다음에 드릴게요.  I will give the money after I take it out from the bank.

책을 다 읽은 다음에 빌려 줄게요.  I will lend the book to you after I finish reading it.

회사 끝난 다음에 뭐 하세요?  What are you going to do after work?

저녁 먹은 다음에 술 한잔 할까요?  How about have a drink after we eat dinner?

친구가 한국에 간 다음에 연락이 없어요. I haven’t heard from my friend after she went to Korea.

You can switch 다음에 to 후에.

Then how to say ‘before you do something’?  We use ‘-기 전에’ after a verb.  For example,

한국에 오기 전에 어디에서 살았어요?  Before you came to Korea, where did you live?

집에 가기 전에 저하고 잠깐 이야기해요.  Let’s talk a little before you go home.

회사를 그만두기 전에 한 번 더 생각해 보세요.  Please think one more time before you quit the company.

집에 가기 전에 꽃집에 들러야 돼요. I have to stop by a flower shop before I go home.

옷을 사기 전에 입어 보세요. Try the clothes on before you buy them.
