-(으)ㄴ 지 + time +되다/지나다/넘다

“verb (으)ㄴ 지 time 되다”

means it has been time since you did the verb action. 되다 means become, sometimes we use 지나다, 넘다 which mean ‘to pass(for time)’. You will hear this when Koreans ask you “how long have you been studying Korean?” or “How long have been here?”.

For the conjugation,

공부하다(vowel ends) + ㄴ 지 + 2년 + 되다
먹다(consonants ends) + 은 지 + 30분 + 되다

For example,

한국어를 공부한 지 얼마나 됐어요? How long have you been studying Korean?
한국어를 공부한 지 1년 됐어요. I have been studying Korean for one year.
이 책은 안 읽은 지 10년도 넘었어요. It has been 10 years since I read this book.
그 사람하고 연락을 안 한 지 5년이 지났어요. It has been 5 years since I contacted that person.
친구하고 싸운 지 한 달이 넘었어요. It has been a month since I had a fight with a friend.
여기 온 지 6개월 됐어요. I have been here for 6 months.
이 컴퓨터를 산 지 정말 오래됐어요. It has been a long time since I bought this computer.
그 영화를 안 본 지 10년이나 됐어요. It has been 10 years since I have not seen that movie.
밥을 먹은 지 한 시간밖에 안 됐어요. It has been only one hour since I have eaten.
