[Expression] 몸에 관한 관용어 idiomatic phrases about body

• 가슴에 못을 박다 : Describe that someone hurt your heart, for example, A son got married a woman who his mom hates. 아들이 어머니 가슴에 못을 박았다.
• 귀가 가렵다 : You think someone is talking about you, for example, 왜 이렇게 귀가 가렵지? 누가 내 얘기하나?
• 귀가 얇다 : When a person listens to other people’s opinion too much, 넌 왜 그렇게 귀가 얇니?  어제는 그 가방 안 산다고 했으면서 친구가 예쁘다고 하니까 오늘 또 사고 싶어?
• 귀를 기울이다 : To listen very carefully, 민호는 선생님의 말을 귀 기울여 들었다.
• 귀에 거슬리다 : A thing that you don’t like to hear, 지혜가 영어를 너무 많이 써서 귀에 거슬린다.
• 귀에 못이 박히게 듣다 :  To hear something so many times, 귀에 못이 박히게 들어서 이제는 외울 수도 있다.
• 눈에 익다 : To be familiar, 얼굴이 눈에 익은데 우리 어디에서 만난 적이 있나요?
• 눈이 높다 : Very picky about choosing something/someone, 우리 언니는 눈이 높아서 웬만한 남자는 마음에 안 들어해요.
• 눈치를 보다 : To check someone’s mood/facial expression, 남편이 어제 늦게 들어 와서 제 눈치를 보면서 저녁을 먹더라고요.
• 다리를 놓다 : To be matchmaker, 친구가 참 예쁘던데, 저하고 다리 좀 놓아 주세요.
• 머리가 좋다 : To be smart, 제 동생은 머리가 좋아서 공부를 안 해도 항상 1등을 해요.
• 머리를 식히다 : To rest one’s mind, 공부를 너무 많이 했더니 머리가 아파서 머리 좀 식히러 나왔어요.
• 발등에 불이 떨어지다 : There is something that is urgent, 제 동생은 항상 발등에 불이 떨어져야 공부를 해요.
• 발이 넓다 : To know many people in different field, 제 남편은 발이 넓어서 모르는 사람이 없어요.
• 배가 아프다 : To be jealous, 친한 친구가 좋은 회사에 취직해서 정말 배가 아팠어요.
• 배꼽을 잡고 웃다 : To laugh loudly, 그 사람이 너무 웃겨서 우리 모두 배꼽을 잡고 웃었어요.
• 손이 크다 : To make huge amount of something, 제 어머니는 손이 크셔서 음식을 보통 10인분 정도 만드세요.
• 어깨가 가볍다 : To be relieved from something that you worried, 일이 잘못될까 봐 많이 걱정했는데 일이 잘 풀려서 어깨가 가볍다.
• 어깨가 무겁다 : To take heavy responsibility,  이렇게 중요한 일을 맡게 되서 어깨가 무겁습니다.
• 얼굴이 두껍다 : Describe a person who is brazen,  친한 친구의 남자 친구를 뺏고 이 자리에 오다니 정말 얼굴이 두껍네요.
• 입만 살다 : Describe a person who is all talk and no do,  A: 과장님, 이번 일은 제가 해결하겠습니다. B: (talking to himself) 어휴, 저 놈은 하는 일은 없으면서 입만 살아서 말만 잘해요.
• 입이 가볍다 : Describe a person who doesn’t keep secrets, 그걸 민수한테 말하면 어떡해? 너 걔가 얼마나 입이 가벼운지 몰라?
• 입이 무겁다 : Describe a person who keeps secrets, 나한테 다 말해 봐. 나 입 무거운 거 알지?
• 콧대가 높다 : Describe a person(usually a woman) who is very picky,  혜정이는 콧대가 높아서 웬만한 남자는 눈에도 안 들어와.
• 통이 크다 : Describe a person who is very cool about spending money for others, 우리 회장님은 통이 커서 기부를 할 때 보통 3억을 넘게 하셔.

[Vocabulary] 아무 : 아무도(no one) and 아무나(any one)

아무도(no one) and 아무나(any one)

 

아무means ‘any(unspecific)’ or ‘no‘.  When it comes with a particle ‘-도’, it means ‘no’.  But when it comes with ‘-(이)나’, it means ‘any’.   If you use 아무도, you should use a negative word in the sentence.  For example, 

아무도
거기에 아무도 없었어요.  There was no one.
파티에 아무도 안 왔어요.  No one came to the party.
그 영화를 아무도 안 봤어요.  No one saw that movie.
숙제를 아무도 안 했어요.  No one did homework.

아무나
거기에 아무나 갈 수 있어요. Anyone can go there.
이 영화는 아무나 볼 수 있는 영화예요.  Anyone watch this movie.
아무나 데리고 오지 마세요.  Don’t bring a random person.

You can use 아무 as a determiner such as, 
아무 음식이나 먹으면 안 돼요. You should not eat random food(not specific).
아무 음료수나 다 괜찮아요. Any drinks are fine.
아무것이나(아무거나) 주세요. Please give me any kind.
아무것도 안 먹었어요. I have eaten nothing.
아무 말도 안 했어요.  I have said nothing.

* Particle -도 means ‘also’ and ‘even(in a negative sentence)’.  For example,

저도 가고 싶어요.  I also want to go.
저는 한국 사람이에요.  제 남자 친구도 한국 사람이에요.  I am Korean, my boyfriend also is Korean.

한 번도 안 가 봤어요.  I have been there even one time.
한 명도 안 왔어요.  Even one person did not come.

 

* Particle -(이)나 means ‘or’ and ‘a lot more than I expected’ when it is with numbers. For example,

김밥이나 비빔밥을 시켜 주세요. Please order Gimbop or Bibimbop.
신촌 역이나 홍대 역에서 만나요. Let’s meet Shinchon station or Hongdae station.

냉면을 세 그릇이나 먹어요?  Eat three bowls of cold noodles? (Speaker thinks three bowls are a lot)
어제 술을 다섯 병이나 마셨어요.  I drank five bottles of alcohol. (Speaker thinks five bottles a lot)
백만 원이나 썼어요?  Did you use a million Won? (Speaker thinks a million one is a lot)

[Expression] A 말고 B : not A but B

 A 말고 B means ‘not A but B’, ‘except for A’ or ‘B instead of A’ in English.
You can use this with nouns or verbs. Let’s look at nouns first.

noun(A) 말고 noun(B)

이거 말고 저거 주세요.	Give me that one, not this one.
우리 커피 말고 차 마셔요.	Let’s drink tea instead of coffee.
그 사람 말고 민수 씨하고 가고 싶어요.	I want to go with Minsu instead of that guy.
저 말고 다른 사람한테 얘기하지 마세요.	Don’t tell anyone but me.
이 색깔 말고 다른 색은 없어요?	Do you have other colors except for this color?

 

If you want to use this with verbs, you should put ‘-지’ in front of ‘말고’

거기 가지 말고 같이 영화 봐요.	Don’t go there, let’s watch a movie.
회사 가지 말고 저하고 같이 놀러 가요.	Don’t go to work, let’s hang out with me.

영어로 이야기하지 말고 한국어로 이야기하세요.	Don’t speak in English, speak in Korean.
