[Grammar] 보다 더 more than

When you compare two nouns,  you can use -보다 particle which means ‘than’. It often comes with 더 (more) or 훨씬 (much more). The position for ‘noun+보다’ is very flexible, so you can put it in front of a noun that you want to compare. For example, 

Noun1이/가   Noun2보다  (더)  ~  = Noun2보다  Noun1이/가 (더) ~

Noun1을/를  Noun2보다  (더)  ~  = Noun2보다  Noun1을/를 (더) ~

Let’s look at more sentences.

캐나다가 미국보다 더 커요.  Canada is bigger than U.S.A.

한국이 일본보다 작아요. Korea is smaller than Japan.

이 가방이 저 가방보다 더 비싸요.  This bag is more expensive than that bag.

이 바지가 저 바지보다 더 예뻐요. These pants are prettier than those pants.

LA가 샌프란시스코보다 더 따뜻해요. LA is warmer than San Francisco.

이 식당이 저 식당보다 더 맛있어요.  This restaurant is more delicious than that one.

저는 커피보다 차를 더 좋아해요. I like tea more than coffee.

야구보다 테니스가 더 재미있어요. Tennis is more fun than baseball.

영어가 한국어보다 더 어려워요.  English is more difficult than Korean.

돈보다 건강이 더 중요해요.  Health is more important than money.

비행기가 기차보다 더 빨라요.  Planes are faster than trains.

[Grammar] -아/어/여 봤어요, -은 적이 있다 have an experience

Verb+-아/어/여 봤어요(보+았어요)

 means ‘have an experience’. It is -아/어/여 보다(try, experience) and 았어요  combined together.

Verb(ends with 아/오 vowel) + 아 봤어요
Verb(ends with other vowels) + 어 봤어요
Verb(ends with 하(다) ) + 여 봤어요 => 해 봤어요

For example,
유럽에 가 봤어요? Have you been to Europe before?
불고기 먹어 봤어요? Have you had Bul-go-gi before?
소주를 마셔 봤어요. I have had soju before.
그 책을 읽어 봤어요. I have read that book before.
이 화장품을 써 봤어요. I have used that cosmetic before.
번지점프를 해 봤어요. I have done a Bungee jump before.

* ‘have watched’ is 봤어요, not 봐 봤어요(X)

The negative form is ‘못 -아/어/여 봤어요’. 

유럽에 아직 못 가 봤어요.I have not been to Europe yet.
불고기를 못 먹어 봤어요.I have not had Bulgogi.
그 말을 못 들어 봤어요. I have not heard before.
그 책을 못 읽어 봤어요. I have not read that book.
이 화장품을 못 써 봤어요. I have not used that cosmetic.
번지점프를 못 해 봤어요. I have not done a Bungee jump.

-아/어/여 봤어요 often can be switched with  -아/어/여 본 적이 있어요 which is combined -아/어/여 보다(try) and -(으)ㄴ 적이 있어요(have an experience) together.

For example,
유럽에 가 봤어요. = 유럽에 가 본 적이 있어요.
이 화장품을 써 봤어요. = 이 화장품을 써 본 적이 있어요.
그 책을 읽어 봤어요. = 그 책을 읽어 본 적이 있어요.
번지점프를 해 봤어요. = 번지점프를 해 본 적이 있어요.
그 말을 들어봤어요. = 그 말을 들어 본 적이 있어요.

The negation form for -아/어/여 본 적이 있어요 is -아/여/여 본 적이 없어요. 

For example,
불고기를 먹어 본 적이 없어요. I haven’t had Bulgogi yet.
유럽에 가 본 적이 없어요.  I haven’t been to Europe yet.
번지점프를 해 본 적이 없어요. I haven’t done a Bungee jump before.
이 화장품을 써 본 적이 없어요. I haven’t used this cosmetic before.
그 영화를 본 적이 없어요. I haven’t watched that movie.
