-아/어지다 -> -아/어뜨리다
There are many words in Korean that end with -아/어/해지다 and a lot of them are passive or intransitive verbs(no object) such as 넘어지다, 깨지다, 빠지다 etc,
Do you remember how to make causative? As we learned causative(if you haven’t see the causative post, click here), we can always make these verbs with -게 하다. However, there are some verbs also used with -아/어뜨리다. And do you remember the difference between using causative suffix(이/히/리/기/우/구/추) and –게 하다? If we use causative suffix, the action is acted by the subject directly and -게 하다 is more indirect way like using tools or through commands. So -아/어뜨리다 and causative suffix are the same nuance. Here are some examples.
Exmaples>>
-이/가 넘어지다 (someone is fall) : -을/를 넘어뜨리다(to knock down, trip someone)
-이/가 깨지다 (glass is broken) : -을/를 깨뜨리다 (to break glass/plate)
-이/가 빠지다 (fall into water/danger) : -을/를 빠뜨리다(make someone fall into water/danger)
-이/가 부러지다(legs,sticks are broken) : -을/를 부러뜨리다 (to break legs, sticks)
-이/가 떨어지다(fall down) : -을/를 떨어뜨리다 (to drop something)
-이/가 터지다 (something is exploded) : -을/를 터뜨리다 (to pop, break)
-이/가 부서지다 (something is shattered) : -을/를 부서뜨리다/부수다(to shatter/smash)
-이/가 퍼지다 (something is spread) : -을/를 퍼뜨리다 (to spread rumor, disease)
-이/가 무너지다(something is collapsed) : -을/를 무너뜨리다(to tear down)
-이/가 늘어지다(something is hanging) : -을/를 늘어뜨리다 (to make something hanging)
-이/가 쓰러지다(someone is fall) : -을/를 쓰러뜨리다 (to knock down, trip someone)
Sentences>>
이 아이가 친구를 넘어뜨려서 다치게 했어요. (This kid tripped his friend, made him injured.)
소정 씨가 저를 위험에 빠뜨렸잖아요. (Sojung! You made me fall into danger!)
놀부는 제비 다리를 부러뜨린 후 다시 고쳐주었어요. (Nolbu broke a swallow’s leg and fixed it.)
어머니께서 소중하게 여기시는 접시를 떨어뜨려 깨뜨렸어요. 어떡해요? (I broke my mother’s plate that she adores, what should I do?)
소문을 퍼뜨린 사람이 너지? (You are the one who spread the rumor, right?)
머리를 길게 늘어뜨리고 다니는 사람이 있던데 보셨어요? (Have you seen a person who walking around with long hair?)
