[Grammar] 르 불규칙 ‘르’ irregular

I posted a lot of irregular rules before. You can click here to check other irregular rules.  Here is ANOTHER one 🙂

 

When 르 meets 아/어, 르 will drop and add ㄹ라 or ㄹ러 depending on the previous letter’s vowel. If the previous letter has 아/오 vowel, add ㄹ라. But the previous letter has other than 아/오 vowels, add  ㄹ러. This is the same rule for 아/어 conjugation.

 

For example,

다르다 + 아/어 => 다(ㅏ vowel) + ㄹ라 or ㄹ러 => 달라요/ 달랐어요 / 달라서
자르다 + 아/어 => 자(ㅏ vowel) + ㄹ라 or ㄹ러 => 잘라요/ 잘랐어요 / 잘라서
빠르다 + 아/어 => 빠(ㅏ vowel) + ㄹ라 or ㄹ러 => 빨라요/ 빨랐어요 / 빨라서
모르다 + 아/어 => 모(ㅗ vowel) + ㄹ라 or ㄹ러 => 몰라요 / 몰랐어요 / 몰라서
고르다 + 아/어 => 고(ㅗ vowel) + ㄹ라 or ㄹ러 => 골라요/ 골랐어요 / 골라서
흐르다 + 아/어 => 흐(ㅡ vowel) + ㄹ라 or ㄹ러 => 흘러요/ 흘렀어요 / 흘러서
기르다 + 아/어 => 기(ㅣ vowel) + ㄹ라 or ㄹ러 => 길러요/ 길렀어요 / 길러서

 

Sentences,

제 언니하고 저는 아주 많이 달라요.  My sister and I are very different.
머리를 잘라서 시원해요.  It is very cool because I got my hair cut.
너무 빨라서 못 봤어요. I couldn’t see anything because it was too fast.
한국어를 몰라서 불편했어요. It was very inconvenient because I didn’t speak(know) Korean.
아무거나 골라  보세요. You can choose anything.
눈물이 흘러서 안 보였어요. I couldn’t see well because I was crying.
이 채소들을 잘 길러서 팔 거예요. I will grow these vegetables and sell them.
